In order to study the effect of seed deterioration on germination and seedling growth of seven sugar beet breeding populations at different salt concentrations, a factorial experiment (using C.R.D) was conducted in 1993 at seed technology laboratory of Sugar Beet Seed Institue, Karaj, Iran. Each seed sample was divided in to 3 sub-samples. Two sub-samples of breeding population with about 30% moisture content were artificially aged with in sealed aluminum foil packets at 40◦C for 4 and 5 days. Consequently 21 seed samples with different vigour levels were provided. The vigor of these seed samples was determined, using probit of percentage germination (ki. Crude estimate of initial quality) and mean germination rate under favorable conditions. Mean germination rate and ki for breeding populations ranged from 0.21 to 0.4 day-1 and from 3.46 . to 6.64 respectively. Subsequently, germination and seedling growth of the seeds were evaluated at different salt concentrations. Analysis of variance of data showed that both genotype and seed deterioration had significant effects on percentage germination and seedling length. Percentage germination and seedling length of vigourous, (less-deteriorated) sees were significantly and seedling length of vigourous, (less-deteriorated) seeds, both in low and high salinity conditions. The effect of salinity on seedling length was more than that on germination percentage. Less deteriorated breeding populations of “8001-Bulk” and “7233-P-107” were germinated earlier and produced taller seedlings, compared to other five breeding populations.
