The use of resistant catch crops is an important factor in crop rotation as a preventive measure in integrated nematode management. Therefore, field experiments were conducted in 1992 and 1993 to investigate the effect of selected cultivars of oil radish (Raphanus sativus) white mustard (Sinapis alba), buckwheat (Fagopyrum escu!entum) and Phacelia tanacetifolia on population decline of sugar beet cyst nematode. The catch crops were planted after the harvest of the previous crop (winter wheat) and the assessment of the initial nematode population (pi). The final population (pf) was determined and the mean ratio of pf to pi calculated from the number of nematodes in soil samples collected from each treatment 138 days (first year) and 106 days (second year) after planting. The results showed that the mean ratio of population decline was 64% with the test cultivars Nemex, Pegletta (oil radish) and Maxi (white mustard), and differences were significant (P < 0.01) in comparison with the number of nematodes in the untreated control plots.
