Abstract

Conducting irrigation after cultivator usage results in rapid water infiltration into the soil and increase in water consumption. With the aim of reducing the depth of water infiltration, the soil surface compaction device was made in the form of compaction wheels and a trapezoidal compaction device and were attached to the back of the blades of light horizontal cultivator. The experiment was conducted for sugar beet crop in factorial based on randomized complete block design with three replications in Zarghan Agricultural Research Station of Fars province in 2020-21. Experimental treatments were the use of light horizontal cultivator with goose foot at three levels of trapezoidal compactor (I1), metal compactor wheel (I2), rubber compactor wheel (I3) ,and tractor speed at three levels of 4 (S1), 5.5 (S2) and 7 km h-1 (S3). Parameters such as soil cone index, evaluation of soil transverse profile in irrigation furrows, bulk density, weed control index, water infiltration rate, water productivity and quantitative and qualitative yield of sugar beet were measured. Results showed that the use of soil compaction devices could affect water productivity and crop yield by changing the physical parameters of the soil. Among soil surface compaction devices, the rubber compactor wheel device showed a better condition than the other two devices in terms of all the measured parameters at a speed of 7 km h-1 (I3S3 treatment). Data obtained from root yield, water productivity and white sugar yield in I3S3 treatment were 77.93 t ha-1, 4.26 kg m-3 and 8.66 t ha-1, respectively.
