Abstract

Due to high degree of mobility, nitrogen is considered as one of the most important pollutant to ground water. Nitrogen has also profound effects on quantity and quality of sugar beet yield. The experiment was conducted at Sugar Beet Seed Institute experimental field located at Kamal Abad, Karadj in 1994. The experimental design was a split plot with three replications. The ratios of basal N/total N at 4 levels (O, 25% , 50%  and 75%) were considered as main plots and time of nitrogen application at three levels (planting time, 2-4 leaf stage, and 8-10 leaf stage) was as in sub plots. The total amount of nitrogen for all treatments was constant (138 Kg N.ha-1) and applied as urea with 46% N. Analysis of variance showed a significant effect of time of N application on root yield. Application of N at 2-4 leaf stage produced the highest root yield. The effect of ratio of basal N / total N and its interaction with time of N application of root yield were also significant. The effects of N application time, ratio of basal N to total N, and their interactive effect was significant. It was concluded that the highest white sugar yield per hectar was obtained by application of all nitrogen 20 days after sowing.
