Abstract

The area under autumn sugar beet cultivation in the crop year of 2021-22 decreased by about 5000 ha (from 26000 to 21000 ha) compared with the previous year, most of which was related to Khuzestan province and due to the limitation of water resources. Root yield increased from 53 to 68 t ha-1and sugar content decreased from 14.81 to 14.64%. The increase in yield caused increase in sugar beet production from 1.41 to 1.43 Mt despite the decrease in cultivated area. Reactivation of the Ahvaz Sugar Factory after 15 years and the doubling of the cultivated area in Kermanshah and Fars provinces, the increase in root yield in all regions and the activity of the Eqlid and Kovar Sugar Factories in autumn cultivation of Fars province are promising events. The extension of harvest period until July 30 in Khuzestan province, bolting occurrence in Kermanshah province due to the use of inappropriate varieties and lower air temperature during winter, as well as bolting occurrence in some areas of Fars province, were among challenges of autumn sugar beet cultivation in 2021-22. High cost of sugar beet production and low average yield in new areas are among factors that may challenge autumn cultivation in these areas. Therefore, development and sustainability of autumn sugar beet cultivation requires reducing production costs, increasing root yield and quality, and optimal use of water resources, which can be achieved with proper planning.
