Abstract

To study the correlation between stability parameters in sugar beet, a series of experiments was conducted within a randomized complete block design with four replications in 9 locations for four years. 20 commercial cultivars of sugar beet were studied. After simple and combined analysis of variances, stability parameters including environmental variance, environmental coefficient of variation, wricke ecovalence, stability variance (shukla), coefficient of deviation from regression, and coefficient of determination were calculated for some important traits like root yield, sugar content and white sugar yield. The results of combined analysis indicated that a significant genetic variance existed among the cultivars. Significant differences were also observed between years and location. Genotype x Environment interactions for root yield, sugar content and white sugar yield and Genotype x Year, Genotype x Location and Genotype x Year x Location interactions for white sugar yield were statistically significant. No significant correlation was found between the stability parameters of the studied traits. Therefore, stability parameters could not be used to simultaneously select for high yield and stable genotypes. Correlation coefficients between environmental variance and coefficient of variance, coefficient of determination and deviation from regression for both stability variance and ecovalance were statistically significant and the results indicated that each of them could be used in the selection of stable genotypes. In using the coefficient of determination and deviation from regression. plant breeders are bound to consider such parameters as the mean, Slope or regression and deviation from regression. Therefore the stability variance of shukla is recommended for the selection of stable genotype.
