Abstract

Various plot sizes are used by sugar beet researchers in the evaluation trials. It seems that most of the plot sizes are determined based on their experience than the scientific basis. Cost and accuracy are two limiting factors for determining optimum plot size. In this study, the optimum plot size was determined based on the minimum coefficient of variation. The experimental design was split plot in RCBD with four replications. Four different plot lengths were used as main plot and four different plot widths were used as sub plot in Hamedan for two years (1995-96) The ANOV A Showed that the plot length and also the interaction between plot length and plot width were not significant for root yield, sugar content and sugar yield. Thus. various plot sizes were determined based on the coefficient of variation. In conclusion. sugar beet plot with 2 m width and 8 m length had the minimum coefficient of variation, and it may be suggested as an optimum plot size for sugar beet breeding experiments.
