The objective of this e~periment was to assess general and specific combining ability (GCA, SCA) of some physiological characters such as hypocotyl diameter, hypocotyl length, fresh weight of hypocotyl and root length of sugar beet seedlings at 28-daysold stage. An experiment with a 7*7 half diallel cross, using Griffing's method 4 (model B) was carried out in a greenhouse, at Sugar Beet Seed Institute in Karaj in 1996-1997. Seeds of 21 F1 hybrids were sown in boxes usingRCBD with three replications and the characters were measured after 28 days. The results showed that the effects of GCA for hypocotyl diameter were more important than the effects of SCA, indicating the role of additive genetic variance in controlling this character. The effects of GCA were also significant (p<0.01) for hypocotyl fresh weight but not (p>0.05) for root length of seedlings. The effects of SCA were significant (p<0.05) for hypocotyl diameter and root length of seedlings but were not significant (p>0.05) for hypocotyl fresh weight. Thus, these results suggesting that recurrent breeding selection program may be proposed to increase the frequency of favourable genes controlling these traits.
