Abstract

To study the growth pattern and development of sugar beet in Dezfol region this research was conducted at Safi-Abad Agricultural Research Center during 1995 - 1998. The experiment conducted in a randomized complete block design with 20 treatments and four replications. The treatments were sugar beet harvesting during the growth season with two weeks interval until final harvest. A bolting resistant variety (BR!) was planted in early fall of each year. The results showed that growth patterns of sugar beet were similar in three years of study, however the different years had significant effects on sugar beet yield and quality. Thermal pattern was also similar during the growth season in each year. The means of temperature were higher in 1995-96 and 1996-97 than 1997-98. The maximum of total fresh weight (125-175 t/ha) was obtained 200 days after emergence of the crop. The root growth was increased in the early season and depending on the conditions of each year it was increased dramatically during 120-150 days after emergence until the final harvest. The maximum root yield was obtained 240 days after emergence, ranging from 65 to 75 t/ha in different years. From early season to 200 days after emergence the most part of assimilation was allocated to leaf and petiole. After this time the growth of the root was greater than the leaf and petiole. The crown had a steady and low growth pattern from early season to 200 days after emergence and then it was increased significantly until final harvest. The maximum sugar content was obtained between between 120 10 150 days after emergence, depending on the root growth and air temperature. After this time, it was reduced, presumably due to high root growth and temperature. Reduction of sugar content in the late season depended on the conditions of each year and the rate of reduction was low in the cool season.
