Field evaluation of some sugar beet cultivars for resistance to powdery mildew

Abstract

Sugar beet is an important industrial crop, ranking as the second largest source of sugar production in the world. Powdery mildew is one of the significant fungal diseases affecting this crop globally, and it is present in all sugar beet cultivation areas in Iran. Utilizing resistant cultivars is considered the best management approach to control this disease. Therefore, in this study, several promising sugar beet cultivars were evaluated with the aim of identifying resistant cultivars. In this research, plant materials included 17 cultivars named Ekbatan, Paya, Arya, Shekoofa, Motahhar, Arta, Dena, Sina, Asia, Kimia, Nika, Tara, Homa, Hosna, Palma, Modex, and BTS 335, along with the susceptible genotype 191, evaluated in a randomized complete block design with three replications under field conditions. Each experimental plot consisted of four rows planted over two meters with a 50 cm spacing. The two middle rows were allocated to the genotype being evaluated, while the outer rows in all experimental plots were planted with the susceptible control 191 to ensure uniform distribution of inoculum. The experimental field was inspected every two days, and after the appearance of the first disease signs, the disease intensity was assessed weekly. Resistance evaluation was based on three criteria: the disease intensity at the final recording, area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC), and the number of conidia produced per unit area. In this assessment, the Modex cultivar was identified as resistant, showing a significant difference compared to all evaluated genotypes across all three evaluation methods. Therefore, this cultivar may be recommended for cultivation if it possesses desirable agronomic traits, or it can be used as a source of resistance in breeding programs.
